History of Lempuyang Temple

  • 1). Lempuyang Luhur Temple and other Sad Kahyangan Temples were founded in the 11th century AD when Mpu Kuturan accompanied King Udayana to rule Bali with his queen. Sad Kahyangan Temple was established to protect Bali so that people continue to do things that are justified according to religious teachings. The establishment of the Lempuyang Luhur temple cannot be separated from the events of the ancient fall of Bhatara Tiga from Mount Semeru in Bali and the events that followed. Of the many sources, it is worth citing three of them, namely:
  • 2). In the Lontar Kutara Kanda Dewa Purana Bangsul it is stated that Sang Hyang Parameswara brought the mountains in Bali from Jambhudwipa (India), to Mount Mahameru. Pieces of Mount Mahameru were brought to Bali and divided into three large sections and also a small section. The peak is Mount Agung while the middle is made of Mount Batur Bali and Mount Rinjani Lombok, Smaller fragments form the interconnected mountain slopes of Bali. These mountains include Mount Tapsahi, Penlengan, Siladnyana, Beratan, Batukaru, Nagaloka, Pulaki, Sangkur Peak, Rangda Hill, Trate Bang, Padang Dawa, Andhakasa, Uluwatu, Sraya and Mount Lempuhyang. In the Old Javanese language, Lempuh means "gamongan". He brought the mountain ranges that surround the island of Bali by Sang Hyang Parameswara as the location of the gods manifesting God to protect Bali.
  • 3). In Lontar Kutara Kanda Dewa Purana Bangsul also states that Parameswara assigned his son Sang Hyang Agnijayasakti and other gods to Bali and maintains the welfare of Bali and is located on Mount Lempuhyang or Mount Gamorangan along with other gods.


In the Sading C inscription in 1072 Saka, it is stated that Mount Lempuhyang is also called Mount Adri Karang. Mount Adri Karang is King Jayasakti because that is the mountain which is also called Karangsemadi. Raja Jayasakti was ordered by his father Sang Hyang Guru to come down to Bali to build a temple to become a safe and prosperous area. Raja Jayasakti invited his priests and assistants as well as the people to fulfill Sang Hyang Guru's orders to build Bali by initiating the construction of a temple on Mount Lempuhyang as a statue of God as Sang Hyang Iswara. Previously, Raja Jayasakti did it as the first step in building a peaceful life in Bali.


Priests from Lempuyang Temple are always held by one descendant traditionally according to the purusa (patrilineal) line, while the "pengangge" used at Lempuyang Luhur Temple is always white and yellow. When the aci or piodalan ceremony is held, all the materials are provided by "Truna" (youth), while those who work are "Daha "(krandan) are teenage women. This is so that everything is sacred, because it is spiritual, although sometimes this can't be done yet. guarantee of holiness.
